The Department of Environmental Engineering (DTU Environment) at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for one or more positions as Assistant or Associate Professor within Residual Resource Engineering. 

Responsibilities and tasks
The Assistant or Associate Professor must strengthen the Department’s research and research-based teaching within one or more of the following research areas in relation to residual resources:

  • Anaerobic digestion processes: reactor configurations, process optimization, integrated resource recovery and biorefinery concepts
  • Microbial ecology in anaerobic environments: metagenomics, metatrascriptomics, microbial isolations, metabolic pathways
  • Microbial electrochemistry: configurations, optimization, mechanisms
  • Waste characterization: sampling, pre-treatment, chemical analysis of complex solid materials
  • Circular Economy: clean material loops, recycling and utilization of waste materials, material-energy-substance flow analysis
  • Sustainability assessment: life cycle assessment modelling and life cycle costing of residual resource systems, inventory modelling, data quality and uncertainties.

The position requires understanding, experience as well as the ability to collaborate within several of the above areas. The Assistant or Associate Professor is expected to teach at bachelor-, master- and PhD levels and to provide mentoring and supervision of PhDs, postdocs, and researchers (depending on the career level of the candidate). Teaching includes being responsible for courses, adjust existing or develop new courses. 

Research and innovation activities will take place within the strategy of the Department and require ability to work in collaborative teams, identify and develop new research and innovation, develop research proposals of relevance for the section, manage research projects, think holistically and interdisciplinary, be flexible and offer a balanced visibility in society.

While teaching, research and innovation activities are expected to be carried out in close collaboration with colleagues across the Section, active interaction with other sections at the Department as well as with other DTU departments are essential.
The level and range of responsibilities depend on the career stage of the candidate.

Qualifications
Candidates for an

  • Assistant Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
  • Associate Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training.

The working language is English, but for the sake of teaching at the undergraduate level (BEng and BSc), applicants must be able to communicate also in Danish (or another Scandinavian language) within a few years after joining the Department.

In order to qualify for a position, candidates must meet the following criteria (reflecting the candidates career stage) with specific relation to residual resources and the previously mentioned research areas:

  • Documented and successful teaching, including development, planning, execution and evaluation of courses
  • Documented and successful research project management, research collaboration both with internal and external partners, as well as collaborative research proposal development
  • Original scientific output at high international level

Ability to identify specific areas for potential collaboration within the Section in relation to both research and teaching.
