SDU Mechanical Engineering (SDU ME) invites applications for a position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering. SDU ME is part of Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark, located at the main campus in Odense.

The application deadline is October 31, 2024, at 11.59 PM/23.59 (CET/CEST)

SDU ME embraces a wide field of expertise within fluid mechanics and heat transfer, multiphysics optimisation, mechanical design and construction, and structural dynamics monitoring. We offer educational programmes at both Bachelor and Master levels. We create research and development in collaboration with internal and external partners and industry.

To complement our team, we are looking for an Assistant or Associate Professor within the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer, preferably with experience in one or more of the following fields:

  • Numerical methods for fluid mechanics and/or multiphysics
  • Experimental fluid mechanics and/or heat transfer
  • Turbulent and/or multiphase fluid dynamics
  • Fluid-structure-interaction and/or conjugate heat transfer

The ideal candidate will have experience with both numerical and experimental fluid dynamics.

The successful candidate is expected to support the growing activities in fluid mechanics and heat transfer as part of the Multiphysics Simulation and Optimisation (MSO) research group, and be in charge of experimental equipment, such as conventional and heated wind tunnel, Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (LDA/PDA), Shadowgraph imaging techniques, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), heat sink and thermal conductivity measurement.

The successful candidate will contribute to both on-going research projects and to defining and establishing new projects together with colleagues and industrial partners. The candidate must be able to compete for national and international research grants. Especially for applications for Associate Professor level, documented experience in winning research grants is a requirement.

In addition, the candidate shall contribute with competence and dedication to teaching of existing and new courses at Bachelor and Master level and supervise Bachelor, Master, and PhD students. Our engineering programmes are a combination of theory courses and projects, and you will be involved in both activities.

As an Assistant Professor, you will complete a Lecturer Training Programme that equips you with the necessary tools to conduct effective and inspiring teaching, and through successful completion be able to apply for future open positions into Associate Professor level at SDU ME.

The candidate must have

  • PhD degree in a relevant area of engineering or physics
  • Experience in theoretical, numerical, and/or computational fluid mechanics
  • Postdoctoral or industrial research experience
  • Good communication skills in English
  • Documented teaching experience for applications at Associate Professor level

In addition, experience with as many as possible of the following is valued

  • Conventional and heated wind tunnels
  • Advanced optical tools for flow and sprays such as LDA, PDA or PIV
  • Numerical and/or computational fluid dynamics
  • Convective and conjugate heat transfer
  • High heat flux cooling
  • Microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip devices
  • Fluid-structure-interaction (mechanical deformation)
  • Single and multiphase turbulent flow
  • Boundary layer theory
  • Spray formations and droplet transport
  • Industrial collaboration
  • Participation in national and international academic networks of researchers
  • Team-working skills in addition to self-motivation and the ability to work independentl
