Assistant or Associate Professor in Fermentation Scale Translation

The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at DTU has established a strong research and teaching activity in the field of biochemical engineering, supported by industries such as Novozymes, Novo Nordisk and Chr Hansen. To further strengthen this field, the Department wishes to make significant new investments in bioprocess engineering research and teaching in the coming years. As part of this expansion the Department invites applications for a permanent position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Fermentation Scale Translation.

The position is part of a large initiative granted by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with the aim of establishing a Research Based World Class Joint Education Program in Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing in collaboration with DTU Bioengineering and the Novo Nordisk Center for Biosustainability. At least four new faculty positions will be established as part of this initiative, which apart from this position will include expertise on bacterial fermentation physiology and performance, automation and high-throughput fermentation technology, and downstream bioprocessing.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to teaching, research and innovation at the department as well as lead a research program in fermentation scale-up and scale-down. Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to be instrumental in promoting the field and the development of experimental pilot-scale facilities, as well as collaborating with colleagues who will complement with more theoretical and model-based approaches.

The position will also give the opportunity to help design new courses to extend our education in bio-manufacturing and to take part in our extensive teaching program in pilot-scale operations, including international summer-schools.

Alongside research and teaching in this field, the candidate will be expected to contribute to other areas of Chemical and in particular Biochemical Engineering.

Qualifications
We seek an expert in the scale-up and scale-down of all types of bioreactions, such as fermentation, including high-viscosity systems. Knowledge of both modeling, and in-particular experimental approaches to help elucidate the effects of scale would be advantageous, including instrumentation and control.

Candidates must

  • assistant professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
  • associate professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record, and research vision
  • Societal impact
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International impact and experience
  • Leadership potential and collaboration
  • Communication skills
