SDU’s eScience Centre – mission and organization

The mission of the eScience Centre is to support research through the development and provision of advanced ICT infrastructure, services and expertise. We provide services and expertise in the areas of High Performance Computing, Cloud Services, Data Services and e-science. We support large research, educational and government institutions, as well as the business community.

The SDU eScience Centre is one of SDU’s major strategic initiatives and spans SDU’s five faculties, all represented in the centre’s steering committee board. The board includes Dean Martin Zachariasen (chairman) and University Director Thomas B. Vind, underscoring the strategic importance of the centre’s activities. The centre leader is Professor Claudio Pica, who together with Centre Administrator Wendy Engelberts comprise the management of daily operations. The centre currently comprises six additional staff members for research infrastructure support and development.

The centre is organized with an agile team structure with a high degree of teamwork and collegial supervision allowing both for creative development, independence and practical knowhow and counseling, support and service provided for the centre’s many and varied users.

We address stimulating and interesting technological challenges, and offer a research-like  environment where we encourage the study of innovative solutions. We firmly believe in open-source and web technology as means to reach our goals.

As a place of employment, we offer

  • An exciting opportunity to hone existing skills and contribute to the forefront of technological development – and see this translated into practical use through the daily support of the wider community;
  • A collegial working environment characterized by teamwork and creativity.

The eScience Centre is now expanding its staff in all its core areas and is therefore looking to recruit senior experts in core fields who can successfully engage and facilitate teams of software/hardware developers and, together with the management of the centre, set the strategic direction for the development of the centre, both its services and its infrastructure.

Fields of expertise
We seek senior architects with specialist expertise within the following fields:

  • High Performance Computing (hardware and software),
  • storage infrastructure,
  • cloud computing and storage architectures,
  • database systems,
  • big data analytics,
  • systems development,
  • full stack web development,
  • continuous development and integration,
  • linux system administration,
  • data management.

Demonstrated experience in at least four of the above areas is required, and candidates with experience in more areas will be strongly preferred. Candidates may have an MSc or a PhD in a relevant field, but this is not required. The SDU eScience Centre is still in a process of consolidating its expertise within a range of different fields. Each of the successful applicants will have their own particular area or areas of specialist expertise that they cover, the content of which will be agreed upon during the hiring process.

A successful applicant is expected to have

  • a strong background in Linux systems;
  • strong programming skills (e.g. in Javascript, C/C++, Java, Kotlin, HTML, bash or Python);
  • a proven ability to work productively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team balancing divergent objectives involving research, code development, supporting software and consulting with scientists.

In addition to the specialist expertise and experience, we expect a successful applicant to be able to act as a team leader for an independent team of software/hardware developers. The eScience Centre provides services to the research community and our senior architect is therefore expected to be able to provide specialist skills in HPC, big data analytics and data management and, in dialogue with researchers and research leaders, to develop and deliver tutorials and workshops. Weight will be placed on communication and interpersonal skills, and fluency in English is expected.

Typical duties
As a senior architect, your main point of reference will be to the centre director Professor Claudio Pica, though a high level of independence and independent initiative is given and expected. As a team leader for software/hardware architects, we expect you to be part of the recruitment process for your team, distribute tasks within the team and support the team members on technical issues. You will be part of the management group of the centre and thereby, drawing on your specialist expertise, help set the strategic direction of the centre as well as identify and coordinate the tasks of the different teams. In the interaction with external partners, you will be an ambassador for the centre handling customer relations and providing expert advise to researchers as well as industrial partners.

Condition of Employment
The starting date for the job is as soon as possible in 2018, and it will be agreed with the successful candidates. Appointments are for full time positions with no ending date.
