PhD position on All-Optical Signal Processing for High-Spectrally Efficient Transmission

Current communication networks rely on optical fibres to sustain the constant increase in data rate driven by the perpetual growth of Internet traffic. In order to efficiently utilize optical fibres, it is critical that the spectral efficiency of optical communication systems keeps improving to match the increasing demand for high-speed information exchange. In optical communications, however, the nonlinear properties of optical fibres cause distortion to the signal and no clear solution tackling the problem has yet been found. Several approaches have been proposed mainly relying either on all-optical or electrical solutions to either mitigate or compensate the signal distortion. All-optical approaches to nonlinearity compensation and signal regeneration is of particular interest as it can operate over multiple WDM channels, therefore removing the need for the massive parallelization required by electrical techniques, and thus potentially decreasing power consumption and latency.

The SPOC centre of excellence has a strong focus on optical signal processing for orders of magnitude improvements in bandwidth and energy efficiency exploring several different material platforms in the quest for the ultimate transmission capacity.

The Ph.D. project will be carried out in the High Speed Optical Communications group (HSOC) in the Department of Photonic Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. The HSOC group is at the very forefront of international research in optical communication technology and holds a number of world records in ultra-high speed optical communication. There is access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities. The group is highly international and encourages collaborative work and an informal working environment.

Responsibilities and tasks
This Ph.D. position will be part of the SPOC centre within the Flagship addressing Information theory, capacity and advanced coding and will investigate:

  • Numerical investigation of all-optical signal processing techniques with a strong focus on nonlinearity mitigation and signal regeneration for highly-spectrally efficient optical communication systems
  • Characterization and optimization of novel signal processing schemes based on different nonlinear platforms, e.g. nonlinear fibres, silicon- and III-V waveguides
  • Design and implementation of experimental demonstrations of transmission reach and spectral-efficiency enhancement

As part of the Danish Ph.D. program the student will follow a number of Ph.D. courses as well as take part in teaching. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to carry out a longer external research stay. We have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organizations.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
