The Department of Bio and Health Informatics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has its main research and teaching activities in bio-medical and bio-technological informatics, metagenomics, epidemiology, quantitative genomics, integrative systems biology and machine learning. Research involves the use of vast amount of phenotypic, clinical, environmental, biological and multi-omic information in humans, animals, plants and microbes.

The department is seeking an associate professor and research leader in quantitative genomics, bioinformatics and systems biology with a focus on animal biosciences. The department hosts and manages Europe’s largest life science and biomedical super-computing facility - Computerome.

Responsibilities and tasks
The associate professor will actively seek external funding to develop a strong research program in quantitative genetics, epigenomics, systems genomics/biology and bioinformatics related to both animal and human biomedical and biosciences. He/she will be a leader of the group Quantitative and Systems Genomics (QSG) and will be a main contact person for this disciplinary area within and across DTU departments and to our external academic and industry partners.

The associate professor will conduct research in quantitative genetics/genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, integrative systems biology, genome informatics and bioinformatics related to quantitative traits and complex diseases in animals or animal models or in humans. He/she will work with diverse multi-omic data sets from high-throughput ‘omic assays such as next-generation sequencing, microarrays, mass spectrometry and SNP genotyping. The associate professor will have a focus on obesity, diabetes, metabolic and immune disorders, psychiatric diseases and use of animal models (e.g. pigs, mouse, and rat) and be critical in the development of personalized and predictive medicine in these disease areas.

He/she is expected to publish research results in international journals, disseminate results via stake-holder meetings and conferences and actively take part in research-based teaching in BSc and MSc level programs related to quantitative genetics, bioinformatics and systems biology. He/she will have responsibility of group leader and will report to the Head of Department of Bio and Health Informatics.

Tasks:

  • Conduct research in quantitative genomics, bioinformatics and integrative systems biology using diverse multi-omic data sets from animal, aquatic and human life science areas and publish research results in internationally peer-reviewed journals
  • Develop new research projects or programs and actively seek external funding from national, EU and international funding bodies.
  • Supervise and/or co-supervise MSc and PhD students and mentor postdocs and assistant professors, in his/her area of expertise and perform academic assessment work
  • Develop novel statistical-bioinformatics methods and software tools for the analysis and integration of high-dimensional data sets to gain biological insights into complex diseases and traits and to deliver results of practical importance and impact.
  • Work closely with biologists, experimentalists, clinicians, regional hospitals and other project teams to answer biological and clinical questions of interest, specifically with the DTU departments - DTU Bioengineering, DTU Vet, DTU Food, DTU Compute and DTU BioSustain

The job description and personal specification may be reviewed on an ongoing basis in accordance with the changing needs of the group and the department.

Qualifications

  • A PhD degree in one or more of the following areas: quantitative genetics or statistical genetics, genome informatics or bioinformatics and computational biology or systems biology with research based on animal or human biosciences.
  • At least 4 years of documented relevant research work experience in the above areas following completion of PhD degree (preferably at the level of senior scientist or assistant professor) in a well-recognized academic or public sector organizations.
  • Evidence of principal supervision of MSc and/or PhD students who have completed their degrees
  • Evidence of teaching at BSc and/or MSc level in relevant disciplines
