Researcher/Senior Researcher in Shellfish Ecology/Production and Coastal Ecology

Applications are invited for a position as Researcher/Senior Researcher targeting research, public sector consultancy and innovation in shellfish production and fisheries and coastal ecology. The position is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with work location at the Danish Shellfish Centre (DSC, Nykøbing Mors, Denmark).

Responsibilities and tasks
For this position we are looking broadly within the Danish Shellfish Centre work area in order to advance our understanding of shellfish ecology and biology in relation to production and utilisation including environmental interactions with focus on bivalves. This includes i) improving our understanding of the ecological role of shellfish and impact of shellfish production in coastal areas; ii) developing our understanding of the impact of invasive species and shellfish diseases in coastal areas; iii) developing economical and ecological sustainable methods for new species in lower trophic level aquaculture; iv) evaluation of management plans and technical measures allowing a sustainable shellfish production. The research is done in a combination of analysing data acquired from field and laboratory experiments, data from public and fisheries monitoring as well as data from commercial productions utilising modelling techniques in an interlinked approach. Innovative skills are important, as the area requires new solutions.

The Researcher/Senior Researcher is expected to improve the capacity of the institute for conducting relevant research within the field, giving advice to managers of fisheries and environment, policy makers and other relevant authorities as well as foster innovation in cooperation with the industry. The Researcher/Senior Researcher is furthermore expected to be actively engaged in writing applications to both national Danish and international funding agencies as well as participating and being in charge of existing projects at the Danish Shellfish Centre.

The Researcher/Senior Researcher will contribute to teaching in the master education Aquatic Science and Technology and on PhD level, and supervise PhD students and postdocs as well as participate in the daily operations of the DSC centre for dissemination and education.

Qualifications
Candidates should as minimum have a PhD degree or equivalent - candidates for a senior researcher position must further have experience at least as Assistant Professor/Researcher/Postdoc or similar qualifications and have a track record of internationally acknowledged research in shellfish ecology and biology and coastal/estuarine ecology.

The candidate should have experience, knowledge and visions for integration of scientific findings with utilisation of results on a practical level in shellfish productions or fisheries management procedures or ecosystem systemic analysis and management. Experience with practical methods and procedures are important but candidates with modelling experiences are also invited to apply.

Further qualifications:

  • Innovative approach to the research field both in relation to developing the research but also in relation to the development of new solutions and new concepts.
  • Good communication skills are required and the candidate should be able to communicate with both fishermen and managers.
  • The ability to contribute to the development of external cooperation and to attract funding to the research area is seen as an asset.
  • Experience in scientific diving is an advantage.
