Applications are invited for a position as senior researcher in Fisheries Technology and Innovation with emphasis on research and advice. The Fisheries Technology research group is situated in Hirtshals and comprised of 7 scientific staff and technical staff. The senior researcher will enter the Fisheries technology research group with a special focus on technological solutions to fisheries management challenges.

The Fisheries Technology Research group is part of the Section for Ecosystem based Marine Management. The section has 35 employees and focuses on interdisciplinary research aimed at improving our understanding of marine ecosystems and how they are managed. The section offers an internationally recognised and highly dynamic scientific environment.

Responsibilities and tasks 
The research tasks will focus on participation in national and international projects aimed at 1) developing, testing and documenting more selective fishing gears, and 2) develop gears, methods and models that can support the implementation of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy and 3) document ecosystem effects of fisheries, and 4) integrating solutions which are at the technological forefront within the industry, and 5) conduct applied research in partnership with fishing industry and other stakeholders, and 6) provide advice for the Danish government.

The successful applicant will engage in our existing extensive national and international collaboration with industry as well as other research institutions. Important tasks include the development of new innovative research and management projects, including project applications. The position includes experimental work on fishing vessels. It also includes responsibility for disseminating research results in both popular literature and international scientific journals. Teaching is a possibility but not a requirement.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent in fisheries science or technology.
  • Candidates should hold experience and academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Researcher or Postdoc for a period of no less than 3 years. 
  • A background in biology or engineering is desirable.

Assessment

  • In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:
  • scientific production and research potential at international level
  • innovative skills and the ability to achieve funding for new ideas
  • the ability to communicate at all levels, such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to development of the department’s external cooperation

Particular consideration will be given to:

  • experience with experimental field work, including work on commercial fishing vessels
  • experience in marine technology and innovation
  • experience in handling and statistically analysing data
  • ability to work both independently and as an integral part of a team
  • a track record of attracting external research funding
