PhD scholarship in CIRCit - Sustainability Impact Assessment for Circular Economy

A PhD student position (3 years) is available at the Section of Engineering Design and Product Development, within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. The position is created in connection with the project “Circular Economy Integration in the Nordic Industry for enhanced sustainability and competitiveness (CIRCit)”.

The CIRCit project is supported by the Nordic Green Growth Programme and is running in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), SWEREA (Sweden), Innovation Center Iceland and Confederation of Technology Industry in Finland. The PhD student will work closely with the consortium partners and industrial stakeholders.
 
Responsibilities and tasks
The aim of this PhD project is to conceptualise, develop, validate and implement a framework to assess the sustainability impact of Circular Economy implementation. Impact will be evaluated in terms of social innovation, environmental performance and business benefits, with a systemic view of the bio- and techno-spheres. The framework will be developed in a way to support: 

  • decision-making regarding Circular Economy implementation;
  • detailed measurement of specific Circular Economy initiatives and projects.

The PhD candidate is expected to develop/employ quantitative sustainability impact assessment methods, and consider the potential rebound effects linked with Circular Economy.   

Strong collaboration with the industrial partners and other partners in the consortium is expected for the development, validation and implementation of the configuration tool. The candidate will publish his/her research results in international peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences and seminars.
 
Qualifications
The applicant should be highly motivated and hold a master’s degree preferably within Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related areas. Good command of sustainability evaluation methods, written and spoken English, and experience with product development and circular economy are required.

Further qualifications

  • Candidate must have knowledge of sustainability assessment methods.
  • Candidate must have knowledge in at least two of the following six fields: circular economy, sustainable design, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), rebound effects.
  • Candidate must be in the first four years of his/her research career.
  • Excellent early achievement track-record (publications, awards, conference presentations, etc.).
  • Strong work ethics and motivation to succeed within a competitive research field.
  • Team spirit and excellent collaboration skills.

Approval and Enrolment 
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Tim C. McAloone and the relevant PhD school at DTU.
