Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (tenure-tracked) / Assistant Professor in New Building Materials in Engineering and Architectural Design

Department of Engineering at Aarhus University, Denmark, has an open position in the Civil and Architectural Engineering Section for an Associate Professor, tenure-tracked Assistant Professor or 4-year renewable term Assistant Professor in New Building Materials in Engineering and Architectural Design.

Responsibilities include developing an innovative strategic research agenda together with colleagues and external partners, nurturing and leading excellent research activities, contributing to an inspiring and industrially relevant education at undergraduate and graduate levels and expanding industrial collaboration.

Applicants should as a minimum hold a PhD degree, and are expected to have a general academic profile in civil or architectural engineering. 

The department wishes to strengthen and develop the Architectural Engineering with a researcher who has demonstrated excellence in basic and applied interdisciplinary research in the topics of the position. 

The successful applicant’s research should demonstrate fundamental understanding of the properties and mechanics of materials, and ideally encompass a combination of theoretical, computational, and experimental aspects. The applicant should have interest in developing new building materials such as ultra-high performance concrete, glass fiber concrete, biomaterials, etc.

Competencies in mechanics of materials are absolute requirements the applicant must fulfil.  Moreover, competencies related to topics like adaptive structures, fabrication, form-finding, and tectonic form and design are preferred.

The applicants are expected to conduct applied research through external projects, thus experiences from successful research collaboration with both academia and industry are preferred. A preexisting and growing international and national research network is expected from a successful applicant. The successful applicant must show to be a research talent documented through rising publication and citation records evidenced by appropriate bibliometric parameters in good civil and structural engineering  or architectural related journals. The applicants are expected to participate in research supervision for M.Sc., Ph.D. students and post docs, project management and to attract externally funded research. The applicants will be required to teach existing civil and architectural engineering related courses and to develop new, specialized course offerings within his/her field of specialty in the departments BSc and MSc programme.

Applicants at the assistant professor level have a couple of years of post-graduate research and publication experience. The successful candidate must show to be a research talent documented through rising publication records in high ranked journals or conferences related to the field. Experience from successful external research collaborations with industry and academia, project management skills, and experience in attraction of external funding is preferred.

Applicants at the associate professor level should have at least 4 - 5 years of post-graduate research and publication experience. Research leadership and ability to define and manage research projects is required, as is a successful record of external research funding. The successful candidate must document a rising publication record, participation in international and national networks and success in international project applications. An associate professor is a tenured position.

Department of Engineering at Aarhus University (eng.au.dk/eng) was established in 2011 to promote and develop engineering research and education at Aarhus University. Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process. 

Formalities and salary range 
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. 
The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
