Assistant Professor in Computational Materials Design and Method Development

Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy) and the Section for Atomic Scale Modelling and Materials at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as assistant professor in computational modeling and in silico prediction of novel materials for efficient conversion and storage of renewable energy. DTU Energy is focusing on the understanding and development of new materials and technologies for energy conversion and storage, e.g. fuel and solar cells, batteries, membranes, magnetic refrigeration and thermoelectrics, electrolysis and sustainable synthetic fuels and chemicals.

Responsibilities and tasks
The assistant professor’s tasks will be to strengthen the department’s competences in computational modeling and design of energy materials and fundamental reaction mechanisms within, e.g., (electro)catalysis, batteries or solar cells/fuels. Particular focus will be placed on the development and application of methods within at least one of the following three areas:

  • extending the length scales of density functional theory (DFT) simulations, e.g. quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) and implicit/explicit solvent models.
  • extending the time scales of atomic scale calculations based on DFT or many-body perturbation theory, e.g. Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) and accelerated dynamics.
  • methods suitable for utilization and analysis of Big Data, e.g. machine learning and artificial neural networks.

The assistant professor will also supervise student projects and take part in teaching and dissemination of research findings and innovation, both scientifically and in the public domain. Another important task will be to attract external funding from public and private sources.

Qualifications
The applicant is expected to have performed original computational research at the atomic scale, preferably at the density functional theory level, in photo/electrochemical energy conversion and storage or related fields. The candidate should hold a PhD degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or similar, and display good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

The successful candidate is innovative and able to work both independently and in cross disciplinary teams, as well as with international and industrial partners. Preference will be given to candidates with prior postdoc experience within the methods and research topics listed above.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • experience in teaching
  • scientific production and research potential at an international level
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to development of internal and external cooperation

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

An assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, the employee transfers to a position as associate professor provided that the employee is recommended for assessment and assessed as qualified.
