The Biological and Chemical Engineering Section (BCE) at Department of Engineering (www.eng.au.dk) and the Centre for Circular Bioeconomy (CBIO) at Aarhus University invites applications for two full professors in biorefinery. One full professor in “green biorefinery technology”, and one full professor in “general biorefinery”.

CBIO is a cross departmental center at the Faculty of Science and Technology. The center includes departments of Animal Science, Agroecology, Bioscience, Food, Environmental Science, Chemistry and Engineering. CBIO focus on applied research in circular bioeconomy (www.cbio.au.dk).

The University follows an ambitious strategic investment plan to significantly increase activities within research and education in biorefinery. The vision is to bring AU into the global biorefinery engineering elite. Aarhus University therefore seek exceptionally innovative and visionary engineering researchers to be part of this build-up and to strengthen and develop ENG-BCE and CBIO at Aarhus University. The positions are affiliated to Department of Engineering and are available as soon as possible.

Biorefinery at ENG-BCE and CBIO
BCE and CBIO have, in combination, a strong research expertise within biorefinery, including biomass primary production (Department of Agroecology and Bioscience), biorefinery technology (Department of Engineering and Chemistry), food and feed processing and quality (Department of Animal Science and Food) as well as aggregated environmental and socioeconomic impacts (Department of Environmental Science).

The advertised professorships must support the strategic agenda of the university by extending the current range of strong competences within the following key disciplines:

  1. Green biorefinery technology: The professorship in green biorefinery technology relates specifically to the establishment of a green biorefinery R&D platform at Aarhus University, with particular focus on development of processes and process technology to maximize the value of fresh green biomass. The existing green biorefinery platform has particular focus on protein extraction and processing, but it is the ambition to expand the research and technology development to include all aspects of green biorefinery technology, taking into account all fractions of fresh green biomass such as sugars, fibers, high value molecules etc.
  2. General biorefinery: The professorship in general biorefinery should focus on strengthening and extending a general biorefinery platform with a broad focus on side streams from conventional agriculture (both sugar and lignocellulose platform), waste streams from agriculture and other industrial and household organic waste streams, including waste water treatment sludge. The professorship can have main focus on either Biotechnology or Chemical engineering in biorefinery. Research including process development, process design and process upscaling including downstream processing is critical for the successful professorship. The Department of Engineering already has advanced research facilities at pilot scale (including anaerobic digestion, HTL technology, methanation technologies and various substrate pretreatments), and the professor in general biorefinery is expected to undertake some organization and coordination of all biorefinery activities within the Department of Engineering.

For each of these positions, it is crucial that candidates hold a deep understanding of real-world systems and relevant application domains such as food, feed, bulk chemicals, materials and higher value molecules.

The candidates are expected to work closely with other researchers/groups within the Centre for Circular Bioeconomy and Department of Engineering as well as with external stakeholders. The ability to work in a multidisciplinary team is essential.

The candidates must have excellent writing and verbal communication skills. Relevant industrial R&D experience is considered highly positive. Candidates must, relative to their career stage, have an exceptional record of research accomplishment, a record of sustained external funding, with concomitant nationally or internationally recognized leadership in their field.

The candidates are expected to be able to drive the build-up of internationally competitive research activities, and/or contribute to strengthening the current research activities. Commitment to excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including existing courses and development of new courses, is expected.

Application
Your application must contain a CV including research activities, R&D experience, a complete publication list as well as your teaching, fundraising and leadership experience. Also, a teaching plan/statement and a research plan (length of 2-3 pages each, including your planned future teaching and research directions) are required. Please provide your ResearcherID, Google Scholar profile link, and/or a unique search query in Google Scholar and/or Web of Science to retrieve your publication and citation track record. Also, please provide names of references (minimum 3) whom the search committee may contact directly. Finally, you must indicate the discipline that you are applying for (green biorefinery or general biorefinery).

Place of employment and place of work
Place of employment is Aarhus University, and place of work is Science and Technology, Hangøvej 2, DK-8200 Aarhus N. and Blichers Allé 20, Foulum, DK-8830 Tjele.
