At DTU Civil Engineering, one of three interdisciplinary focus areas is Circular Civil Engineering, and we research and innovate with the aim of supporting a sustainable use of materials in the sector. The senior researcher will work within this frame.

The senior researcher will specifically conduct research the area of using particulate waste materials from the building and construction sector as well as other sectors as secondary resources in the production of new construction materials.

The tasks will include identification of new particulate wastes with potential for the use in various construction materials, chemical and physical characterization incl. evaluation of hazardousness, evaluation of possible scarce elemental resources retained in the waste, development of methods to extract and recover these elements simultaneous to an upgrading of the particulate material to be used in construction materials.

The technical optimization of the particulate materials for use in construction materials will be carried out in close collaboration with different colleagues at the department focusing on e.g. supplementary cementitious materials, geopolymers, bricks or earth-based construction materials. The optimization of the produced construction materials includes mechanical properties, durability, safety and environmental issues. The senior researcher will develop a frame, which can be used to identify the best technical use of a specific secondary resources on basis of the characteristics.

Responsibilities and qualifications

  • Develop research ideas and projects towards societal impact and potential commercialization of construction materials with secondary resources
  • Lead and take part in novel grant applications
  • Outreach to producers of potential secondary resources and producers of construction materials, nationally as well as internationally
  • Present cutting edge research findings in research papers, conference proceedings and other outreach activities
  • Engage in public outreach to increase awareness of the new options for construction material choices
  • Inspire and engage students in the research

Candidates must be

  • Highly motivated by the opportunity to turn waste into resources for the production of innovative construction materials
  • Experienced in characterizing particulate materials in regards to physical and chemical properties
  • Experienced in evaluating hazardousness of waste
  • Experienced in developing technologies for remediation and extraction for upgrading particulate wastes
  • Experienced in construction materials testing
  • Creative and open to interdisciplinary work
  • A strong team player with a large international network

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc

You must contribute to teaching at the Department. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.
