Making life sound better
Through its Jabra brand, GN Audio provides intelligent audio solutions in the shape of state-of-the-art headsets and headphones. One of the biggest challenges facing global tech companies occupied with active noise cancelation (ANC) is speech as background noise – for example in open offices.
Starting June 1, 2020 – or as soon as possible hereafter – you will become part of our R&D Audio Engineering department to examine this problem. The project is co-funded by Innovation Fund Denmark, and you will be enrolled in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering program at the Technical Doctoral School of IT & Design at Aalborg University while working as a full-time employee at GN Audio.
Research speech processing for ANC systems in headsets
The aim of your project is to investigate the possibility of using the characteristics of speech to increase ANC performance in the presence of interfering speech – and subsequently integrating the solution with noise cancelation that copes with other types of noise.
We imagine that you will delve into audio, speech and signal processing, adaptive speech modeling and adaptive intelligence – but it will be up to you to uncover the technological possibilities. This entails participating in international technology conferences, producing data and performing tests in the laboratory as well as effectively communicating findings.
You will independently drive the research project forward, drawing on academic capabilities at Aalborg University and your audio expert colleagues at GN. Moreover, you will be assigned a supervisor in your team who will introduce you to our audio competencies and facilities and support you throughout the process.

In the R&D Audio Engineering department, we know sound. Here, you will join 50 dedicated audio engineers responsible for the audio quality of all our Jabra communication and music products. We always help each other out, and you cannot help but embark on a steep learning curve when you surround yourself with our audio musketeers.

Ready to apply your academic toolbox to the field of speech and audio?
- You hold a relevant master’s degree in electronics, acoustics, physics, mathematics or similar
- You have experience with MATLAB (or similar) as well as digital signal processing or algorithms, preferably, but not necessarily, within acoustics
- You know how to work independently with a practical approach and academic craftmanship that enable you to produce and collect data on your own
- You meet Innovation Fund Denmark’s grade requirements – click here to see the grade requirements described in Chapter 2 and read the guidelines for attaining an industrial Ph.D.
- You speak and write English effortlessly
- It is a plus but not a prerequisite if you know about adaptive speech modeling
