DTU Compute, Section for Embedded Systems Engineering (ESE), invites applications for an appointment as Assistant/Associate Professor in Parallel Computer Architecture with an emphasis on High-Performance Computing (HPC) in embedded systems

Our focus is on systems where close interactions between hardware and software components as well as between the system and its environment, including humans, are necessary, and where trade-offs between competing requirements have to be addressed.

Our main research areas are computing platforms, pervasive/ubiquitous computing and design technologies with focus on system aspects of real-time, real-energy, adaptive, re- configurable, performant, secure, safe and reliable systems. Our research is currently targeting the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and applied in Industrial IoT and Health IoT settings with an emphasis on cross-disciplinary activities.

DTU Compute wishes to strengthen its activities in the area of HPC in embedded systems. Current execution platforms for embedded systems are increasingly parallel and heterogeneous. Multi-core and many-core based systems are being used as hardware accelerators as well as different systems for compute off-load. For such platforms, it is imperative not to consider the platform in isolation but as a system component with strong interaction with the operating system and the compilation system.

Furthermore, the field of high-performance computing and embedded computing is merging, high-performance computing components and technologies are increasingly being used in embedded systems. This is especially notable in emerging systems for machine learning. You will be affiliated with the Embedded Systems Engineering (ESE) section of the department and is expected to interact closely with the other faculty members of the section as well as relevant faculty members of the other sections at the department.

Responsibilities and tasks
With this position, we want to attract faculty whose research is focused on Parallel Computer Architecture and who can conduct research in the intersection of computer architecture, operating systems and compilers with an emphasis on high performance systems and with a holistic mindset. We want to strengthen our capabilities in teaching, research, and innovation within the areas of HPC in the IoT era, where the current trend is to extend HPC from centralized resources out towards, for example, edge sensor nodes.

As an assistant/associate professor you will be responsible for building and expanding the section’s expertise, research and innovation in Parallel Computer Architecture, including several of the following topics:

  •  micro-architecture
  • compilers
  • operating systems and system software
  • programming models
  • high performance data structures such as lock-free data structures
  • computer networks for HPC
  • machine learning and AI aspects, especially for edge devices
  • practical aspects of HPC and their application to embedded systems
  • performance of computer systems

For these research topics an empirical approach with implementations of prototypes and demonstrators is expected.

You will - in addition to your own research - contribute to existing research projects and themes within the section and the department. You will also be assumed to take an active and leading role in forming a department-wide strategy for HPC.

At DTU Compute, we value knowledge sharing and cross functionality. Therefore, you are expected to cooperate and be eager to build relations with colleagues in the department and with other departments of DTU.

You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels. For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

Qualifications
Candidates for an

  • Assistant Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
  • Associate Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training.

You must be able to work academically on an international level within the research fields mentioned above and must also be able to work across the disciplines within the section and establish new research collaborations. Good communication skills are required. You must have a strong background in Parallel Computer Architecture and must be capable of teaching courses in operating systems, compilers and parallel computer architecture, and related topics at the bachelor, master, and PhD levels.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidate’s consideration will be given to

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record, and research vision
  • Societal impact
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International impact and experience
  • Leadership potential and collaboration
  • Communication skills

For the specific position consideration will also be given to:

  •  postdoctoral experience preferably from international research environments
  • empirical research including development of research prototypes and demonstrators. Licensing or commercialization of such platforms to the industry is a strong merit
  • experience with software development and hardware realization
  • research experience with holistic system research topics such as programming models, computer architecture, compilers, networked distributed systems and networks for computer clusters
  • experience with establishing and attracting funding for research projects. The ability to lead research is a strong merit
  • practical experience with machine learning and AI and infrastructures for machine learning and AI
  • industrial experience
  • experience with innovation activities, including patents

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The assistant professor position is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, an assistant professor can be promoted to an associate professor position after assessment. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU.
