Assistant/Associate professors in Civil Engineering in the Arctic
At the Department of Civil Engineering, we are extending our activities within civil engineering in the Arctic, and two new positions, as assistant or associate professors, are open. The positions are housed by the Arctic Technology Centre (ARTEK), which is located at DTU in Lyngby, Denmark and in Sisimiut, Greenland. The positions will include travel activities and will preferably be based at the Sisimiut Campus.
Responsibilities and tasks
The department is looking for flexible and enthusiastic persons, who will take part in the ongoing strengthening of the research, teaching and research-based consultancy activities at ARTEK. The positions are within one of two fields: (1) “construction and physical environment” e.g. the applicant should have experience with Arctic infrastructure engineering and geotechnics, mechanical properties of soil and rock and the implications for buildings and constructions in the Arctic. (2) “building and energy in the Arctic”, e.g. construction technique, building physics, sustainability and energy efficient buildings.
With these positions, we are opening up for new and interesting research fields, which will be more closely defined in collaboration with the candidates. The applicants are asked to submit an overall research plan for the actual topic, including why, what and how, as well as a description of the work in an international perspective. Links to the ongoing activities in ARTEK are mandatory.
The teaching tasks will be within civil engineering in extreme and Arctic climates. The teaching includes lectures and practical exercises at both bachelor and master level. In the practical exercises, we take advantage of the placement of our campus in Sisimiut. Also, project supervision of final project students at both bachelor and master level must be expected. In addition, supervision of students at internships in Greenlandic companies is a part of the position. Candidates who do not speak Danish should be willing to learn Danish within the first two-three years in order to be able to teach in Danish.
Diploma courses are taught in Danish, whereas the Master courses are taught in English.
The candidates are expected to undertake research-based sector consultancy in Greenland and to engage in the continuous dissemination of these activities.
Qualifications
Candidates for an
- Assistant Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
- Associate Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training.
Candidates must also have
- documented experience with work in extreme climatic conditions and in remote areas.
- experience in teaching in construction or building technology in cold climate
- experience in teaching and research on building physics
The candidate should be open-minded and skilled in collaboration and problem solving, project planning and management. We are looking for colleagues who enjoys the challenging nature of research in the Arctic and is able to work both in a group but also independently.
