Assistant Professor (tenure track) in digital fabrication

The Department of Engineering (ENG) of Aarhus University (AU) is looking for an innovative and visionary tenure track Assistant Professor in the group of Socio-Technical Design. This international top-100 University has made an ambitious strategic investment in a 5-year recruitment plan to place the University in direct competition with the global engineering elite. Therefore, the University is emphasizing Socio-Technical Design as a key element in engineering science.

From a point of departure in established collaboration within engineering disciplines and computer science the ambition of the Socio-Technical Design group is to supply design competences in both research and teaching across all scientific and technical disciplines at the university with a particular focus on design at the intersection of social and technical systems.

The group gathers competences from architecture, industrial design, interaction design, textile design and anthropology inspired design. We believe that design skills are built on solid artistic and academic foundations and best executed in a strong technical environment with empathy for social impact. This is echoed in our credo: that we equally care for at the object of design and the impact of design.

The group deploys the approach of Constructive Design Research to develop new knowledge, promoting sketching, co-creation and frame innovation as key elements of research and teaching. In this context design is an interdisciplinary practice merging strong technical competences, aesthetic and social concerns, designed artefacts, systems and spaces whether manifested in materials or concepts.

The Candidate
The ideal candidate brings Human Centered Co-Design together with abilities to create software for the digital fabrication and experience in building interfaces humans-machine loops for mass customization. Ideas on how this leads to increased sustainability within industrial processes and everyday life is a plus. Additionally, we expect applicants to show competences in formgiving, drawing and sketching.
 
Applicants are requested to submit a research plan and teaching portfolio accompanied by a vision statement for the position including expected contributions to the group and how it is connected to prior achievements.

The candidate is required to teach relevant courses in design across computer science, engineering and other technical educational programs, and the candidate is encouraged to establish new, specialized courses within his or her field.

Applicants should as a minimum hold a PhD degree and have experience in post-graduate research and publication activities. The successful candidate must show an emerging productive publication record. Participation in international and national networks of researchers is expected.

Technical Sciences Tenure Track
Aarhus University offers talented scientists from around the world attractive career perspectives via the Technical Sciences Tenure Track Programme. Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of six years with the prospect of performance- based advancement to a tenured Associate Professorship.

The aim of the Technical Sciences Tenure Track Programme is to:

• attract outstanding talented individuals that are competitive at an international level
• to promote the early development of independent research success early in the career of scientists
• to create transparency in the academic career path

As part of the tenure track position, the candidate is offered:

• access to research infrastructure
• capability development, including postgraduate teacher training
• a mentoring programme
• support to develop scientific networks and to secure interdisciplinary research at the highest level

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications - and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, - the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
