The Department of Civil Engineering at DTU, Section for Geotechnics and Geology, invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor position within the subject field of Pavement Engineering. DTU Civil Engineering is composed of six sections with the Section for Geotechnics and Geology engaged in research within the fields of geotechnical engineering, technical geology, applied geophysics, and pavements. We seek a new scientific staff member, having a strong potential to become an academic leader within the pavement arena.

The assistant or associate professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

Activities are expected within the general subject field of transportation infrastructure, with focus on the thermomechanical behaviour of pavements; particularly, generating new knowledge and developing new testing, modelling and analysis techniques for rigid, semi-rigid, composite, and small-element paving constructions. Scientific attention will also be directed towards the integration of modern sensing technologies within these traditional civil engineering constructions.

Moreover, given that the Section for Geotechnics and Geology is engaged in research for infrastructure projects in Greenland, the candidate will be expected to contribute to the field of cold climate infrastructure engineering.

Responsibilities and tasks
The department is looking for a flexible, enthusiastic, well-organized, and independent candidate, who will take part in the ongoing efforts to develop a reputable pavement-related research and education platform at DTU. In particular, it is expected that the successful candidate will be able to contribute to one or more of the following fields:

  • Thermomechanical modelling and analysis of pavement systems.
  • Pavement education at the Bachelor, Master, and PhD level.
  • Sensing and instrumentation for condition evaluation.
  • Mechanical characterization of pavement materials.
  • Pavement design and rehabilitation design.
  • Transportation infrastructure in cold climates.
  • Pavement performance evaluation.

Dissemination of research results is expected through scientific publications, conference presentations, interdisciplinary collaborative projects at national and international level, and services to public administrations and the industry. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to seek and achieve external funding.

Educational responsibilities include among other things, development of new teaching materials, classroom teaching/lecturing at DTU campuses (mainly Lyngby), writing and grading exams and reports, as well as supervision of individual or group projects, and supervision of MSc students, PhD students, and Postdocs. The educational responsibilities will, to the extent possible, be related to the above listed activity focus areas, however flexibility is required; it is expected that the candidate will be able and willing to cover and contribute to a wider spectrum of topics - as covered by the Section’s research fields.

Please note that the expected teaching language on Bachelor level is Danish, while on postgraduate level (MSc or PhD) it is required to be in English. International candidates are required to take courses in Danish and be able to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

Lastly, the candidate is expected to seek collaboration with researchers within the Section, researchers from other sections, and also with researchers from other DTU departments.
