The Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (DTU Bioengineering) addresses challenges of societal and scientific importance through basic and applied research in the areas of microbiology, biomedicine and biotechnology.

DTU Bioengineering serves the interests of society by contributing to the strategically important biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, not only through advances in science, technology and innovation, but, vitally, through the training and education of first-class MScs and PhDs in bio-engineering.

The Department was officially formed July 1st, 2016 as The Department of Systems Biology was split into two new departments.

DTU Bioengineering has approx. 150 employees, comprising faculty members, PhD, technicians and administrative staff. Together they form 17 research groups and teach at both the undergraduate and graduate programmes Biotechnology

Organization
The research at the department is orgnaized in 17 research groups and four research platforms which in turn is organized in three research sections. In addition to the sections the department has a Teaching Core and an Administrative and Service Unit. 

The department is headed by the Head of Department and his Leader Team which consists of the three Section Heads, the Head of Administration and The Head of Teaching. The Head of Department is advised by an external Advisory Board, a Strategic Faculty Forum a Liasion Committee and a Work Environment Committee.
