The Biomedical Engineering Group at the Department of Electrical Engineering seeks applicants for an associate/assistant professorship in Cellular Signalling. The position is available from autumn of 2016.

Our group is responsible for the BSc and MSc programs in Medicine and Technology in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This program enrolls 60 students per year and has more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students. Our group (9 faculty members, 16 PhD students and 3 Postdocs) conducts research in biomedical signal processing, ultrasound imaging, tissue biomechanics, cellular signalling, biotransport, and biofluid mechanics. Both teaching and research are conducted in extensive collaboration with major hospitals and biomedical engineering companies.

Within cellular signalling our focus has been on mathematical models of regulatory processes in biofilm infections (quorum sensing) and in stress response of eukaryotes. New developments in ultrasound imaging allows for observing flow in 4D in the smallest capillaries. We envision combining these strengths in mathematical and experimental studies of 4D dynamics of regulatory processes in transport in cancerous or infected tissue, in renal physiology, or in micro-vascular calcifications.

Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate is expected to expand and develop his/her research profile in cellular signalling, e.g. related to regulatory processes in biofilm infections, cancerous tissue, or micro-vascular physiology.

In addition the candidate is expected to teach biomedical engineering at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels.

Other expectations of the position:

  • Associate Professor - attracting external funding, exchanging knowledge with society, including participation in the public debate, research management, guidance and supervision of assistant professors and researchers and academic assessment work.
  • Assistant Professor - attracting external funding, exchanging knowledge with society and participation in a didactic/pedagogic training (UDTU).

The new Associate/Assistant Professor is expected to collaborate internationally, nationally as well as with other departments at DTU.

Qualifications
Candidates for an

  • assistant professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
  • associate professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training.

The candidate should preferably have a broad foundation in biomedical engineering and have conducted research within cellular signalling and regulatory processes from the cellular to the tissue level.

Applicants must possess and document strong qualifications in research demonstrated through publications and citations in international scientific journals, and through successful collaborations and projects.

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to translate biophysical and biochemical models into mathematical algorithms and implement them as computer programs. Applicants should document their interest, qualifications, and experience in research-based university teaching. Moreover, they must document a vision for their contribution to future research and teaching in the Biomedical Engineering group. Applicants must be ready to actively and constructively engage in collaborations with colleagues in our group and with external partners. Mastering the Danish language is an advantage.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to

  • experience in teaching and education
  • scientific production and research potential at an international level
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to development of internal and external cooperation
