A position as associate professor in the field of genomics & bioinformatics at the Department of Systems Biology, is to be filled as soon as possible.

The department represents the largest concentration of academic, biotechnological research in Denmark. The department is involved in research and teaching in the areas of bioinformatics, computational chemical biology, systems biology, molecular biology, medical microbiology, fermentation technology, metagenomics, proteomics, food biochemistry and process technology, protein chemistry and technology, physiology and genetics of industrial microorganisms and biofuels.

The department has approximately 150 scientific staff and around 80 technical/administrative personnel. In addition to bachelor, master and PhD education, collaborative research and innovation together with national and international universities and industries is given high priority at the department.

Presently, the Center for Biological Sequence Analysis at the department comprises more than 90 academic staff including post docs, PhD students, and research assistants. The research deals with a broad spectrum of subjects within computational analysis of structural and functional aspects of macromolecular sequences of DNA, RNA and proteins.

Several research groups and core platforms are situated within the department, some of which are financed by Danish governmental research programs, private foundations and industry. Many EU and NIH grants are supporting the research as well.

Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate must actively take part in the promotion, development and improvement of bioinformatics research within genomics and next generation sequencing analysis. The applicant should be able to document a strong research potential and profile. As the position will be in the Integrative Systems Biology group, strong qualifications within human genomics and computational biology are required. Additionally the candidate is expected to have solid teaching experience and to participate in planning and teaching at bachelor, master and PhD levels. Furthermore supervision of assistant professors, postdocs and master students are expected as well as continuing education and dissemination of research results at all levels.

Further qualifications:
The candidate must strengthen the activities within one or more of the following areas:

  • Analysis of NGS data from human and model organisms
  • Development of novel tools and pipelines to facilitate discovery within the field
  • Integration and data-driven analysis of large datasets within computational biology
  • High Performance Computing
  • Programming languages relevant for bioinformatics, e.g. Python, Perl, SQL and R
  • Understanding of common algorithms in NGS analysis
  • Contribute to high-scale international Projects
  • Contribution to scientific societies, arrangement of scientific meetings
  • Reviewer/Editor of scientific publications
  • Demonstrable ability to supervise students

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to

  • experience in teaching and education
  • scientific production and research potential at an international level
