Senior Researcher in Theory, Modelling and Simulation of Separation Processes and Novel Unit Operations in the Biotech and Food Industry

A senior researcher position is available within the CAPEC-PROCESS Research Center at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The fellow occupying the position will perform research work in close collaboration with industrial partners - in Denmark and outside – with an interest in design, optimization, operation and analysis of separation processes and novel unit operations.

Furthermore, the senior researcher will, in close collaboration with CAPEC-PROCESS faculty and our partners, be responsible for developing and growing the importance of this research area within the Center.

The senior researcher will, among other things, take part in the SYNFERON and the BIOPRO2 projects where DTU is coordinator. In SYNFERON the focus will be on downstream separations in small-scale bio-refinery concepts and in BIOPRO2 the focus is on modelling, process analysis and optimization of bio-based production and downstream processing. Both research projects are part of a larger consortium including other Danish and international research groups and industrial partners.

Responsibilities and tasks
The primary objective of the senior researcher position that is offered at DTU Chemical Engineering is to investigate the potential use of mathematical models to support the design and operation of separations of fermentation liquids and other complex streams in bio-processing. More specifically, it will be investigated how models can be used to synthesize and design feasible separation processes, develop control strategies and device experimental efforts to support theoretical results. The work includes:

  • Interpretation of available data generated by relevant processes
  • Develop and validate models to represent process condition variations and predict optimal operating conditions
  • Be responsible for dissemination of results to project partners, at conferences and in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Facilitate M.Sc. thesis projects and PhD co-supervision in connection to the research projects
  • Development of collaborations within this area
  • Preparation and submission of proposals to attract funding

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree and preferably several years of postdoc/researcher experience. Furthermore the successful candidate should have:

  • A solid background in chemical process engineering with a good experience in mathematical modelling of separation processes
  • Experience in simulation studies (e.g. sensitivity analysis) using high-level programming
  • A documented background in planning and executing modelling projects
  • Good knowledge of and practical experience with the use of models to describe rates of mass and energy transfer and phase equilibria in fluid systems
  • Experience with student supervision at M.Sc. and Ph.D. level
  • Documented scientific production in terms of journal publications and conference presentations

The ideal candidate furthermore has good communication skills and experience in working in a multi-disciplinary and international research environment.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to

  • scientific productivity and research potential at international level,
  • innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas,
  • the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities,
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • an all-round basis of experience, preferably including international experience,
  • the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation

We offer
We offer an interesting and challenging position in a multidisciplinary and international environment focusing on education, research, public sector consultancy and innovation, which contributes to enhancing the economy and improving social welfare. We strive for academic excellence, collegial respect and freedom tempered by responsibility. The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The workplace will be given at the DTU main campus in Kgs. Lyngby.
