At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Architecture, Design & Media Technology two PhD stipends are available within the general study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The stipends are open for appointment from November 1, 2014.

Job description
The open positions are with the research group Audio Analysis Lab, and the research will focus on hearing aid signal processing. The PhD students will work on the project entitled Signal processing for detecting the cocktail party problem and methods for enhancing listening in noisy situations, which is funded by InnovationsFonden. The project is a close collaboration between AAU and hearing aid manufacturer GN ReSound. The project involves research in new methods and technologies for improving the quality of life for hearing aid users in adverse conditions. The PhD students will be part of an international team at AAU and work closely with experts at GN ReSound. The research is expected to be a combination of theoretical work developing and analyzing new methods for hearing aids and more applied research concerned with implementations and tests.

The applicant must have a MSc, or equivalent, in acoustics, mathematics, or signal processing, and preferably have prior experience within speech, audio, language or signal processing. The applicant must submit his/her MSc thesis in the application system. The degree must be completed at the time of the appointment. Moreover, applicant should be fluent in English and should have strong programming skills and be familiar with MATLAB (or similar tools).

The Audio Analysis Lab at Aalborg University conducts basic and applied research in signal processing theory and methods aimed at or involving analysis of audio signals. The research focuses on problems such as compression, analysis, classification, separation, and enhancement of audio signals, as well as localization, identification and tracking using microphone arrays. The lab and its members are currently funded by grants from the Villum Foundation, the Danish Council for Strategic Research, the Danish Council for Independent Research, and InnovationsFonden. The research projects are carried out in close collaboration with leading industrial partners and universities around the world.
