DTU Aqua, Section for Aquaculture, located in the North Sea Science Park, Hirtshals, Denmark invites applications for an appointment as scientist or senior scientist in the field of fish physiology specifically  related to behaviour and welfare. The position is available from January 1, 2015 or according to mutual agreement.

DTU Aqua - National Institute of Aquatic Resources - is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Our mission is to conduct research, provide advice, educate at university level and contribute to innovation in sustainable exploitation and management of aquatic resources.  The goal is to be a leading international institute for marine sciences, fisheries and aquaculture, which is able to address the environmental consequences and interactions of human activities in the aquatic environment and to resolve the long standing conflict between aquatic resource exploitation and conservation.

Some 25 persons are employed at the Section for Aquaculture conducting research within biological and technological aspects of aquaculture. Our main research themes are

  1. Nutrition, growth and welfare of aquatic animals produced in aquaculture.
  2. Rearing systems and environmental effects, recirculation technology and methods. 

Both topics aimed at improving production efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Responsibilities and tasks
The research will focus on one or more of the following topics

  • Physiological responses to farming conditions 
  • Behaviour and welfare of cultured species 
  • Animal welfare indicators for fish 
  • Physiological and behavioural assessment of stress in fishes 
  • Signalling mechanisms in stress physiology  

We expect the candidate to have a focused expertise within one or more of these topics and their implication for practical aquaculture.

As an integrated part of the job, the candidate is expected to contribute to teaching at MSc and PhD level, as well as undertake supervision of thesis work. 
The candidate is expected to have an applied approach, to pursue collaboration with the aquaculture industry and to participate in raising funds for new research activities.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD degree or similar. 

Candidates for a Senior Research Scienist position must further have experience at least as Assistant Professor/Researcher/Postdoc or similar qualifications

Skills and experience within teaching and potential didactic/pedagogic training is an advantage.

Research is to a large extent carried out in close cooperation with industrial partners in research projects often with international participation; hence, working experience from well-renowned universities, research centres or research oriented entities at private companies will be considered an asset.

The successful applicant is expected to pursue research in adaptive and behavioural physiology to further advance the understanding and management of animal physiology and welfare in aquaculture. Preferred applicants will have a strong record of research accomplishments and demonstrate commitment to excellence in research and teaching.
