Associate Professor in Building Design in the Arctic

At the Department of Civil Engineering there is a position as Associate Professor at the Arctic Technology Centre within the area of building design in the Arctic.

The Arctic Technology Centre is located at DTU in Lyngby and in Sisimiut. It is expected that the candidate will spend approximately 3 months a year at the Sisimiut campus.

Responsibilities and tasks 
The Department is looking for a flexible and enthusiastic person, who will take part in the ongoing strengthening of the research, teaching and public sector consultancy activities at the Arctic Technology Centre. 

The primary teaching tasks will include teaching in sustainable Arctic building design. In particular it is expected that the candidate will

  • contribute to the continued development of the Professional Bachelor Program in Arctic Technology; a special 4-year engineering program, which takes place both in Greenland and Denmark and enrolls Greenlandic as well as Danish students. The teaching is given in Danish
  • lead the development of the teaching program on sustainable and energy efficient building in an arctic context and develop of new courses in arctic building design and building management including a course in Building Design in the Arctic at the coming Arctic Semester for international graduate students
  • supervise master thesis students and PhD students

The research tasks could preferably be in building design adapted to arctic conditions, including

  • building design resistant to snow build up, vertical rain and mould growth
  • renovation of outdated houses and apartment buildings

In addition the candidate could in collaboration with the Vocational Department at the Tech college Greenland be involved in starting new projects aimed at the development of the Greenlandic building tradition. The candidate is expected to participate in and take advantage of collaboration with DTU colleagues from other departments through the Polar DTU Center.

Public sector consultancy would be in relation to building norms and strategies in Greenland and involve continuous dissemination. 

Qualifications
Candidates must

  • hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship or experience from at least 5 years of relevant industrial appointments and should document
  • document didactic/pedagogic training 

It is expected that non-Danish speaking candidates will be able to teach in Danish within three years.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to

  • experience in teaching and education
  • scientific production and research potential at an international level
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation

For the specific position consideration will also be given to:

  • experience in teaching and education in Greenland
  • experience in teaching and research on sustainable buildings
  • experience in building project management
  • dissemination skills at all levels and research potential
  • knowledge about Greenland and the Arctic environment
